  4.     Nine years have passed since an Italian-owned McDonnell
  5. Douglas DC-9 mysteriously crashed into the sea off the Sicilian
  6. island of Ustica, killing 81 people. But the tragedy continues
  7. to haunt. For years, theories about the cause have centered on
  8. poor airline maintenance or bombs.

  10.     Last week a 700-page reconstruction by an investigating
  11. magistrate pointed to another culprit: an air-to-air military
  12. missile. The evidence, as reported by the Italian press: the
  13. fuselage and several bodies recovered from the bottom of the
  14. Tyrrhenian Sea showed traces of a chemical used solely in
  15. high-powered missiles.

  17.     Defense Minister Valerio Zanone promptly stated he had seen
  18. no evidence suggesting that an Italian military aircraft had
  19. fired the missile. Prime Minister Ciriaco De Mita launched a
  20. separate inquiry to examine the possibility that non-Italian
  21. forces were to blame, although NATO officials, the U.S. and
  22. France have said that their aircraft could not have been
  23. involved. Zanone's cautious denial, coupled with the fact that
  24. key evidence has already been destroyed, prompted press
  25. speculation that a government cover-up may have taken place.
  26. Commented the Rome daily Il Messaggero: "It's no certainty that
  27. we will ever know who did it, but it is certain that there was
  28. an air chase." Someone, the newspaper added, has concealed the
  29. truth.
